According to recent surveys, inflation has overtaken the global COVID-19 pandemic as the top concern of Canadians. Rising food, housing, energy, and transportation prices have had a negative effect on the well-being of Canadians. It has impacted those with low or fixed incomes—such as students and seniors—especially hard.

The aim of this lecture is to clarify some of the issues surrounding inflation. Topics for discussion include how inflation is formally defined and measured; how inflation has evolved over time, both in Canada and abroad, and what has caused its recent surge; how households and businesses are responding to higher inflation; how policy-makers at the Bank of Canada are attempting to bring inflation down; and the likely evolution of inflation over the next 2 years.

All are welcome. StFX COVID protocols will be followed.
