Constitutional issues have featured more prominently in the daily politics of Canada than in any other country since the Patriation of the Constitution and the adoption of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms in 1982. Forty years later, what has been the effect of the Constitution Act, 1982 on Canadian democracy, judicial power, federalism, citizenship, and identity? While the legacy of Patriation and the Charter has been momentous, has its influence been good, bad, or ugly?
